Vent Line Protection from Birds, Bugs and Debris
Vent lines equalize pressure, release vapors, and protect storage tanks, pressure vessels, drains, and stacks from vacuum collapse or overpressure. An open vent is also an unguarded opening. In industrial, petrochemical, and processing environments, unprotected vent lines are subject to bird nesting, insect intrusion, and wind-blown debris. Left unprotected, a vent line intended to safeguard a system can cause a failure.
Bird and bug screens are a simple, low-cost safeguard that keeps vent lines functional. Bird screens are designed to provide reliable protection against debris, nesting, and foreign material intrusion in duct, vent, or exhaust line terminations.

Angled Type – A 45° cut screen assembly for angled duct or pipe terminations, secured with a threaded fastener through the mesh face. Airflow orientation should be confirmed before final tightening
Single Clamp – A dome-style mesh cap secured to the termination with a single bolted clamp bracket, a straightforward option for round duct and pipe ends.

Double Clamp – An in-line screen assembly secured on both sides with clamp bands, suited to installations where the screen sits within a straight run rather than at an open end.

Worm Gear Clamp – A dome mesh cap secured with an adjustable worm gear (hose-clamp style) band, allowing a wide range of duct diameters to be fitted and re-tightened easily during maintenance.

Flanged Bird Screen – A bolt-pattern flanged screen for terminations that mate directly to a matching pipe or vent flange, providing a fully bolted, code-friendly connection.
Bird Screen Types and Configurations
SWECO offers several standard configurations, each suited to a different mounting condition and maintenance need.

Installation and Application Information
Sweco bird screens are engineered for quick installation and long-term performance on duct, vent, and pipe terminations.
To install, position the screen over the opening and secure it using the appropriate clamp, flange bolts, or fasteners, ensuring the mesh sits evenly and the seal (if provided) is properly compressed. For angled units, confirm airflow orientation before tightening.
After installation, screens require minimal upkeep; inspect regularly for debris, corrosion, or loosened hardware. Clean using air or water to maintain unrestricted airflow, and replace any damaged mesh, seals, or coatings as needed to ensure continued protection and system efficiency.
Ordering Information
When specifying a bird screen assembly, include the required material, mesh type, coating, and end configuration.
- Standard construction utilizes 304 or 316 stainless steel with 3/8″ or 1/2″ square wire mesh; expanded metal or perforated plate options are available for increased airflow or durability
- Screens over 24″ in diameter are reinforced with flat plate rings or angle flanges for structural integrity
- Optional neoprene, silicone, or rubber seals can be provided to improve vibration isolation
- Wire mesh on the bird screen can be replaced with perforated metal

Limitations of Standard Catalog Screens
Industrial and process vent lines rarely come in standard sizes, standard materials, or standard orientations. Vent lines may be elevated, angled, part of a pressure-rated assembly, or made from specialty alloys to match the process media. Mesh opening size also needs to be selected for the application. If the mesh is too fine, it restricts airflow and tends to blind over with debris. If it is too coarse, it will not keep out insects and smaller birds. Selecting the correct mesh size for a given vent line requires engineering evaluation of the service conditions.
How Sweco Can Help
Sweco Fab, Inc. is an ASME U-Stamp shop that designs and fabricates pressure vessels and process equipment. This combination of ASME code fabrication experience and custom engineering makes us well positioned to design and build vent line protection matched to the actual process conditions of the vent line.
Custom Engineering to Your Application – Sweco’s team of engineers can design a product for a specific application need or replicate an existing design at an improved price point. Which means a bird and bug screen can be engineered around your exact vent diameter, mesh requirement, mounting configuration, and material specification.
Material and Fabrication Flexibility – With galvanized and stainless steel options in multiple gauges, plus optional expanded metal or perforated plate mesh. We can match a screen’s corrosion resistance and airflow characteristics to the vent line it protects. Whether that vent handles corrosive vapors, high-temperature discharge, or long-term outdoor exposure.
Documentation and Quality Support – For facilities that need traceability and code compliance on every component that touches a process system, Sweco provides the engineering and quality documentation needed to support project execution. Including project-required documentation for all pressure piping equipment fabricated. That same rigor extends to custom miscellaneous components like vent screens. This gives facilities a documented, verifiable component with full traceability.
Fast Turnaround – Sweco has expertise in short-lead turnaround projects, which matters when a vent screen failure or missing protection is discovered during a turnaround or outage window and needs to be resolved quickly to avoid extending downtime.
Summary
Bird and bug screens are a small component with an outsized impact on system reliability, product integrity, and regulatory compliance. Treating vent line protection as an engineered component, sized, material-matched, and documented, rather than a generic add-on is what separates a lasting fix from a recurring maintenance headache.
